Introduction of SoCal DMS Workshop

We have recently thought about organizing a Southern California workshop on Distributed Multimedia Systems, to be held annually somewhere in Southern California (and to include primarily local universities from Santa Barbara to San Diego). We propose to organize the first workshop in Los Angeles (either at UCLA or USC).

This workshop is aimed at bringing together students, professors, and researchers from Southern California working on the analysis, design, and performance assessment of distributed multimedia systems and applications. The workshop is aimed at enabling the various research groups to highlight their recent outcomes in this area, at providing students with an opportunity to present their work and discuss with other peers and professors, and at facilitating inter-disciplinary collaborations among various research groups working on distributed media systems and applications. We hope that this workshop will highlight synergies among various related research areas - multimedia, distributed systems, networking, communications - and encourage discussions regarding next generation designs and applications for distributed multimedia systems.

Topics of interest related to distributed media systems include (but are not limited to):

  • Distributed coding
  • Distributed system design
  • Power management
  • Stream mining
  • Cross-layer designs
  • Peer-to-peer multimedia networks
  • QoS provisioning in distributed systems
  • Multi-point video conferencing systems
  • Multimedia processing on distributed systems
  • Multimedia on multi-core architectures
